St. Edmund the Martyr

When Hurricane Charley hit this 1930 church, the bell tower blew over the transept into the courtyard, and portions of the roof were literally peeled back, allowing torrents of rain to flood the sanctuary.

The key elements in restoring St. Edmunds’s revolved around bringing the church up to current code compliance without destroying the historic character of the building. In order to do this, Church Restoration Group retained engineering services from Sutton & Kennerly, a North Carolina firm with experience in historic buildings throughout the country, including the Biltmore Estate.

Subsequent to site review and meeting with city officials, Church Restoration Group was able to develop a cost effective engineering solution to bring the roof up to code with supplemental framing and improvements to the roof deck. Historically correct roofing materials were selected to allow the church roof to breathe in the Florida heat while retaining the historic fabric of the interior. Care was also taken to ensure that fasteners and other elements introduced into the roofing system would not be evident in the finished architectural ceiling.

Church Restoration Group replaced the missing roof sheathing with historically accurate material. Roof sheathing that became the deck and finished ceiling was custom milled to replicate the dimensions of the original ceiling components. The ceiling was then refinished it in its entirety, so that new and existing materials blended together seamlessly, leaving no evidence of changes or alterations.
