Client: Greater Friendship Baptist Church
Location: Youngstown, OH
Value: $231,903

Greater Friendship Baptist Church in Youngstown, OH experienced water and wind damage due to a high-wind storm occurring in February of 2009. Initial emergency services were performed by a local contractor who also submitted a repair estimate. Church Restoration Group (CRG) initially consulted on the loss for the insurance carrier (Safeco)and identified unnecessary items within the contractor’s scope of work. To substantiate the assessment, CRG developed a scope to complete the emergency services and mitigate any further damage. CRG also developed a repair estimates based on the comprehensive assessment.

With a 44% cost-saving difference, Church Restoration Group was given authorization to proceed by the church leaders to complete emergency services and to immediately begin repairs. The total project was completed in time for Thanksgiving holiday services.

Upon review, the church experienced damage due to the force of the high winds that resulted in:

1. One stained glass window that moved almost three inches inward.

2. Another stained glass window that completely shattered and damaged the pews.

3. Damage to roof and skylight areas causing water infiltration.

4. The church building left open to the elements allowing further water infiltration.

SUMMARY OF REPAIRS:
1. The South and West Walls received the majority of the damage due to the large and relatively fragile stained glass windows located on each wall. CRG performed plaster repairs and painting around windows. All walls were sealed and painted and the hardwood floors were repaired and cleaned.

2. The bulk of the savings came from CRG’s recommendation to use a brace and leverage technique to support and move the stained glass window back into place rather than having it totally removed and reset, which was recommended by another contractor’s proposal.

3. The loft stairwell required painting and cleaning baseboards, wood floors and stairs from water infiltration.

4. Two sections of pews were damaged on the south wall due to flying debris. The pews were removed, repaired, stripped and refinished.

5. The Sanctuary required plaster repairs and repainting around the dome and bulkhead.

6. The stained glass received a new frame for the South wall window and repairs to other damaged frames. CRG worked to use as much of the salvaged stained glass as possible.

7. The skylight in the center of the church was also repaired and the chimney cover was replaced that was lost during the windstorm.

8. Three main areas of the roof were removed and repaired along with new downspouts and the addition of a drainage system.

INNOVATIVE CONCEPTS & PROBLEM SOLVING TECHNIQUES:
What makes this restoration unique is not only the total savings to the carrier while delivering quality restoration, but the knowledge and skill for unique repairs and unique spaces, like a church, that CRG brought to the table.

CRG worked to salvage as much of the stained glass as possible from the shattered windows for reuse. Due to the long-lead time for the new, repaired stained glass window, CRG proposed to the carrier to install a temporary protection window with movable, double hung windows. This allowed the church air circulation and much needed natural lighting. This method was used rather than tarping the opening to provide water tight protection.

And finally, looking into the future for the congregation, CRG retained a licensed roofing contractor to consult on repairing the roof and a new drainage system to prevent further water infiltration to the church.

“Your group did an excellent job of balancing the restoration process with the needs of the congregation.”
- Larry Ellis, Safeco/First National Insurance

“Our trust in you was well rewarded.”
- Demetrius Cunningham, Chairman of Deacon's Ministry
