This historic church in one of Florida’s poorer communities had been overlooked for help following Hurricane Francis due to the overwhelming scale of damage in the area. The storm-damage to St. Simon’s parish affected the church and rectory, as well as the adjacent social hall, and a neighboring apartment building that housed needy families.
Shortly after the storm, the congregation installed temporary roofing, but CRG found this to be failing and augmented the system, preventing further water damage. The emergency service CRG provided to the church itself halted the degradation of interior surfaces, saved the organ from further damage and helped to preserve the original character of the worship space.
Assessing the structural and environmental conditions in the parish’s apartment building, the space was found to be uninhabitable due to extensive mold growth affecting the floors, walls, and ceilings throughout the building.
CRG also provided assistance in evaluating the design scheme to add an HVAC system and upgrade roofing materials to the church while being sensitive to the historic architecture.
Restoration of the parish’s social hall also presented to opportunity to make substantial improvements, most notably modernizing the kitchen and restroom facilities.
